Remember watching your grandparents snack on a handful of nuts? Most likely they knew nuts were a great source of fiber and protein.  But did they realize how heart healthy it was to eat a handful of nuts per day. In Texas, 32.4% of children between the ages of 10 and 17 are overweight or obese.  In Bexar county, that figure doubles for adults.

With summertime in high gear, more children are home during the day and the opportunity for healthy snacking should not be overlooked. For children, in particular, the consumption of nuts helps lower childhood obesity. This is due to the high fiber content and generally lower fat intake nuts provide. In contrast, potatoes, specifically potatoe chips, rank the highest in foods that contribute to weight gain.  

Nuts and fruits provide a refueling of energy to children throughout the day that chips and artificial sweets can’t touch.  For children with diabetes type 1 or 2, nuts help control blood glucose levels by providing the under-consumed nutriet, magnesium.

Rich in vitamins, antioxidants, carbohydrates, and fiber, dried fruits have a plethora of health benefits.  Additionally, the natural sweetness of good sugars found in dried fruits helps satisfy the sugar cravings.  Combining nuts and fruits into a summertime snack for adults and children provides a super boost of health for your overall well being.
