Thousands of children will be heading back to school on Monday, August 27th after a short summer hiatus. The age-old question undoubtably continues over lunch with friends:  What’s in your lunchbox?  Lainey and Caitlyn Masterson’s answer is nuts and fruits, otherwise known as trailmix. 

Their mom knows that substituting nuts in the place of chips helps lower childhood obesity while also giving a boost to their brain power. In contrast, potatoes, specifically potatoe chips, rank the highest in foods that contribute to weight gain.  

Nuts and fruits provide a refueling of energy to children throughout the day that chips and artificial sweets can’t touch. Rich in vitamins, antioxidants, carbohydrates, and fiber, dried fruits have a plethora of health benefits.  Additionally, the natural sweetness of good sugars found in dried fruits helps satisfy the sugar cravings.
